Slickmix Comp

SnF Crowned it’s UK Garage King back in February 2009 when DJ Darkside walked away with the Slickmix 2008 title.

12 months on the competition is a long & distant memory. Doesn’t mean we couldn’t catch up with him and get him to through down a little mix for us.

Since winning the Slickmix, Darkside has had his head books studying at uni. Winning the Slickmix meant Darkside got his hands on an exclusive dubplate. Due to availability, Jelly Beats was unable to put an intro together for our winner. Luckily the day was saved by friend of Slick n Fresh Duncan Powell.

Duncan put together a banging personalised mashup for Darkside which he has kindly whacked into a mix exclusively for SnF.

“I’ve tried to include a range of stuff” Darkside told SnF. “Old & new skool, some dark bits, and couple random bits that I’m feeling. Should be something different hopefully.”

Different it is. Feeling it we are.

Slickmix 2008 in association with

Ok UK Garage fans: The polls have closed, the votes have been counted and we have a winner.

This year’s clear winner of the Slickmix 2008 competition is Manchester based DJ Darkside who takes the Slickmix Master crown from last year’s winner DJ Pressure.

Darkside entered a flaming 15-minute mix exploring all corners of new UK garage displaying that ecletic pinache that embodies what SnF – and quite clearly the voting public – are looking for.

A change in format this year saw mixes put to the public vote and saw Darkside become victorious by a clear margin.

The rest of the field came in pretty close, with only a few points between them. All in all the calibre of the finalists were high, but Darkside had that little something to obviously sway the public into crowning him king of the Slickmix.

Darkside wins his own intro special from leading UKG producer Jelly Beats plus vouchers for some shiny new vinyl from UK garage specialists

Slick n Fresh would like to thank the people that took the time to enter, the judges, the public voters and the guys at for supporting the competition.

UK Garage mix competition is on! Slickmix 2008

The biggest and best UK garage mix competition is BACK for 2008!

Last Year

Last year SnF’s mix competition saw brothers Pressure & Listener come first and second in a tough competition. The judges were unanimous in their decision that Pressure had run away with it, getting top marks from all 5 judges.

By winning, Pressure picked up a night behind the decks at UK Flava in Camberley, his very own special of Control-S‘s smash hit ‘Never leave me alone‘ plus a few bits of vinyl from our sponsors Stereohype Recordings & Hairy Cuts. In addition to the great prizes he won, Pressure was also offered a chance to play at the SnF 1st birthday bash. Due to a scheduling conflict he couldn’t make it, so Listener stepped into the booth instead and wowed Herbal nightclub with a set that any red blooded UK garage DJ would be proud of.

So this year…

Think you can dislodge Pressure’s crown and take the title of Slick Mix Master 2008? If you do, here’s what you will win:

  • Your very own dubplate special produced by Jelly Beats
  • £30 of vouchers to spend @ DnR Vinyl
  • The opportunity to have a full length mix featured on SnF

This year we’re keeping it tight but polite. The competition will a similar format – audio only, 15 minutes, any styles of UK garage you wish (which is open to interpretation). We’ve switched it up this year so that YOU get to decide the winner. The SnF judging panel will whittle down the entrants to the best 5, who will be put to a public vote shortly after.

All mixes will be made public after the competition so if you’ve got a gripe you can put it to your public and see how they feel.
